She was helping me plan a route from Zurich to Monaco on Sunday. All routes require at least 3 changes but some are cheaper than others because I can use my Eurail pass. Anyway, it came up that I recently took two night trains in a row, and was mildly sick of the CNL experience. But here's the best part. As she was handing me the ticket she said "you know, you don't look like you've been traveling. You look pretty energetic."

Beaming, I let her know that I've been traveling since January.

That nice, beautiful girl made my day.

Incidentally, the Zurich ticket area is worse than the DMV for waiting. I was B623, here's a picture.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-57798873087556822072012-04-12T03:53:00.001-07:002012-04-12T03:53:11.281-07:00The tourist in ParisAfter two days in a row sleeping on night trains, I'm happy to re-visit my last days in Paris. I went to the Palais Garnier, where you can see lots of ridiculously extravagant rooms. Unfortunately there was a rehearsal in the theater and no matter how much I begged, I couldn't see the Chagall ceiling. I cried :(

I've included a postcard of the ceiling, not to fool you, just to show you why I cried.

I tried on zillion dollar ruby and diamond rings at Cartier. I'm not allowed to mention the person who allowed this but it was fun to play dress up with him or her.

I went to Le Musee d'Orsay and saw beautiful Van Gogh paintings, among others. I'm so happy I've gotten some nice museums in on this trip :)

I had a wonderful lunch with my new friend Olaf. He spends half his time in India, and showed me amazing pictures while we ate Indian food.

Easter and the Monday after were packed with tourists in Paris. Everything was closed, and it rained a lot.

I found a photo booth in the metro station and took dorky photos like the ones in Amelie.

I went to Berlin yesterday for a rehearsal and am glad I did. It was fun to see my new friends again and work on something fun.

Now I'm in Basel, kind of exhausted. My train was delayed so I missed class this morning, but will take a short train to Zurich for a class there this evening.
Some images or ideas are also painfully contradictory, like the enormous crane under the Eiffel tower that everyone was trying to avoid in their pictures, but I decided was too important a sight to pass up. Also, I saw these adorable baby ducks, and then 45 minutes later had a duck salad and foie gras.

I found a great ballet studio in Bastille, studio Harmonique, and visited the modern art museum yesterday, seeing contemporary art from Mexican artists and American painter Christopher Wool.

This afternoon I'm meeting the long lost relative (I think??? maybe we can clarify the connection,) Olaf Van Cleef, artist in India and Paris and heir to the Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry company. I can't wait!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w4ypsQXcYZ8/T37SpkAuHoI/AAAAAAAAAQs/hWSVARnTApU/s640/blogger-image-2044336007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The beautiful spring weather didn't exactly hold up, but otherwise it was full of new experiences, productive dancing, and a lot of fun. Here is why I had such a great time:

I took class with Statsballett Berlin every morning last week. Leslie the administrator was friendly and welcoming, even letting me dump my coat in her office while I took class. I also got to see a friend from the past. Weronika danced in the ballet I choreographed for the New York Chroeographic Institute at the School of American Ballet, spring of 2007. It was great to see her, all grown up now and flourishing as a soloist in the company.

I also made two new friends through neighbors of my mom in Manhattan. Piet is a member of Blue Man Group here in Berlin, and is currently working on a theatrical movement project through a distant collaboration with his old drama/movement teacher in the states. He asked me to be a part of the project, which will be presented in a studio setting in Berlin the last week of April (my european debut!!) I had a chance to get to work over the past few days, and before I knew it, I started feeling like I was contributing to something great. Since the piece is still in the early stages of exploring concept and movement vocabulary, it's really a perfect time to get to know everyone. We each bring something very different to the table, but I think that's what gives the project such great potential. It's too bad that I won't be back until the week before the shows, but I got the feeling when I left today that we're on to something pretty interesting. I hope I will not be forgotten over these next few weeks.

Piet also got me tickets to Blue Man Group last Sunday evening! I had been working with 2 of the 3 Blue Men all day, so it was hysterical to see them perform the show. I had really good seats so I could spot them right away, and I was cracking up the entire time. If you've never seen the show you've got to go; it's one of those things you think you know because you've seen all the posters and commercials, but the real thing will just blow you away.

The other friend I made was Bryce, an opera singer living in Berlin and performing in a show here. Bryce met me to talk about introducing myself to the opera world as a dancer, and had great suggestions and a huge list of contacts to get me started on my search for summer opera employment. We had a great time together, although ate some bad noodles at an Asian food stand at the train station, and were both sick the next day. I have since contacted my first opera company, and have begun to wrap my mind around how dancers are hired for operas, and which companies hire per production. I'll keep you posted as I learn more.

Probably the highlight of my trip to date was my afternoon spent at the Hamam, a womens Turkish bathhouse in Schönberg. This was three hours of bliss in heated marble steam rooms with large individual bowls of hot water and a gold metal bowl used to scoop the water onto your body. I got a body scrub down from a lady, and enjoyed the quiet of a lazy afternoon with nothing to do but lounge around feeling like Queen Sheba. I left feeling like I hadn't been staying in hostels for the last three months; this vagabond has found the remedy for transforming into a human again.

I would like to rate Grand Hostel Berlin as the #1 hostel visited on this trip, with comfortable and clean rooms, single beds with down comforters (no bunks!) friendly staff, and central location. There was no breakfast but the bakery around the corner sold the best latte and yogurt muesli I could have asked for.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, I know it's lame. All I can say is that I was having too much of an excellent time to remember to take any :/.

On to a night train to Paris!! I don't know if you think we look alike but I just wanted to clarify! There's a nice picture of us on Facebook but I don't know how to put it in the blog.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-90570945174406256112012-03-27T07:39:00.001-07:002012-03-27T07:59:01.676-07:00Updating you to my whereaboutsI had a wonderful week in Dresden, taking class with the amazing Semperoper and spending time with my friend Sarah Hay! We took the train to Leipzig on Saturday, and met up with Andrew Brader and Drew Grant, visiting from Ohio. I also met their friend Tyler. I spent the week traveling and auditioning with Drew and Andrew, in Leipzig, Chemnitz, Zwichau (sort of,) Kiel (baby Copenhagen,) and Amsterdam.

In Amstedam we saw the Anne Frank House, Rjyk museum, and Dedamia, an incredible Handel opera which I absolutely loved. We sat in the second row, right by the first violin, and I was in complete heaven the whole time.

I stayed an extra night in Amsterdam before taking the train to Berlin yesterday. Here I am taking class with the company in the mornings, meeting with people who know the Europe opera world (I want to have a non-singing role in a production this summer!) and finding a yoga studio.

It's pretty weird to be in a city where a month ago (or was it 2?) it was bitterly cold and miserable, and now... It's spring!!! I am infinitely happier to walk around exploring all day, and the world just seems brighter and more full of possibility.

That reminds me: the train from Copenhagen to Dresden parked on a ferry that rushed us through the sea. I was very excited and hoped I would see a whale. I was also lonely because I realized that I didn't have anyone to share the excitement with. Maybe it wouldn't have been as exciting if I hadn't been alone though. I made sure to take a picture of myself for my mother :)
probably more than I've ever read before. Here's what I've read so far:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl who played with Fire
The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
-Stieg Larson

The Year of the Flood, by Margaret Atwood

The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, Suzanne Collins

The Orphan Master's Son, by Adam Johnson

Hush, by Eishes Chayil

Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro

Falling Angels, by Tracy Chevalier

Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel
*this one took FOREVER because it's extremely long and about one of my favorite topics, King Henry VIII, so I had to pair it with all four seasons of The Tudors to compare, and I think I need a history book because I get mad when I don't know which version, if either, is right. But I started it in London, which was fun.

The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver

Annabel, by Kathleen Winter

Currently reading: The Lacuna, by Barbara Kingsolver.

Not the fanciest list in the world but still a lot of material, and most of it has been wonderful (also sometimes depressing and horrifying.) Any suggestions for what to read next? (... Besides my Native American religions book for my college course?)Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-57113828139233597062012-03-11T04:55:00.001-07:002012-03-11T04:57:40.786-07:00Copenhagen, Random observancesI am pleased to announce that one thing Copenhagen does incredibly well is...the brunch buffet! I went to a place called Riz Raz, (where I also had lunch with my mom 5 years ago!!) and enjoyed the best assortment of meats, felafel, vegetables, pancakes...I could go on!

This city is really colorful, and I'm looking out to share some examples of the unique fashion of its residents. It seems I need to improve my readiness with the camera, which I lamented when a missed a shot of an old lady with a long fur coat, sea-foam green kerchief and bag, and lace stockings, clicking along in her heels...classic Danish old woman!

Here are pictures from another curious observance...accesorized statues around the city! Clown nosed Triton by the river, and bonnetted man in front of the Old Stage of the Royal Danish Theater. Any ideas what they could mean?
Tomorrow off to Dresden by train! I miss my train vagabonding days, so I'm very excited for the adventure.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-20568945663257146752012-03-11T04:43:00.001-07:002012-03-11T04:43:53.537-07:00My cool sisterAfter reading about my awesome sister in this interview: http://millieabroad.wordpress.com/2012/02/27/meet-the-maker-hazel-village-brooklyn-new-york/
I was feeling industrious by association, and replaced a missing button on my coat, as well as fixing the the hole in the seam and reseeding all the buttons more securely. I hope she will be proud of me. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-81308352425695820352012-03-07T07:16:00.001-08:002012-03-07T07:17:43.930-08:00Tallinn last weekOn the plane to Tallinn I met April, a very nice American woman living in England, and her daughter Isabella. In the time we spent together over the next few days, she let me know that her husband had been concerned that an "American," "ballet dancer," had made herself available in Tallinn for afternoon adventures around Tallinn. When he saw these pictures, I hope he realized that I'm not much of a threat, and wasn't planning on whisking them off, never to be seen again. Here are my friends.

The hostel was awesome, run by two Australian people who were so helpful with things to do and cheap places to eat. Everything in Tallinn is amazingly cheap, and the food was really good. I tried blood sausage, borscht, and an Estonian hamburger.

Saunas are a big thing here, but I opted out of the mixed gender experience. I did find a sauna in the women's locker room of a gym, and it was great.

The company was a huge change from the others I've been to. This one was very classical, performing only full length classics, as far as I could see. It was the only place I've been where everybody speaks the language, so all rehearsals and class were in Estonian( apparently the worlds hardest language to learn. The girls were very serious, an not so enthused about an outsider on their territory. It was a huge challenge, but left me wanting a job there just for the adventure that it would bring.

Overall I loved tallinn and would definitely want to live there. The combination of Scandinavian, Slavic, and western European culture made it one of the coolest places I've ever seen.
Oh, it was absolutely freezing...I slipped on the ice and fell on my butt :)

I'm in Copenhagen now, a story for another day.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-36894712827966401982012-02-27T09:47:00.001-08:002012-02-27T09:47:03.083-08:00Passing CloudsLast night I went to the coolest place in an area east of downtown London (I think called Dalston.) With some of Damien's friends, I wet to a very excellent British pub and ate a very delicious toast with white beans, mushrooms, cheese, and truffle oil.

Then we walked down the road to the coolest place ever, a very laid back club called Passing Clouds. It cost 3 pounds to get in, but when you enter you hear why. Up on the stage were about 6 musicians, all playing a reggae beat. It turned out that it was an open mic jam session, and people took turns playing the instruments, and making the best sounds. The audience was so enthusiastic too. Everyone was dancing, and so excited to see who would perform next. There were even some rappers doing the competition thing, where the person who gets the loudest response wins. This was definitely the best local hangout, and I was so glad that I had such cool friends to show me a fun time in London.

Tomorrows my last day, and then on to Tallinn. I'm starting to feel positive about the next stretch of auditions, and I'm glad I had this rest period!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-5467185180549320772012-02-24T08:29:00.001-08:002012-02-24T08:29:14.216-08:00London, and how I got hereDo I have any followers left? I don't see why I would, but let me try to update you on where ive been:

From Zurich to Saarbrucken, flop; then to Antwerp, rainy but fun! Turned 25, feeling old; went to Oslo, less cold han Germany but frustrating audition. Then to London where I met Jane, had amazing adventures drinking fancy tea, eating Sunday roast, and looking at fancy tapestries and jewels.

For the past week (almost) I've stayed in London, getting organized and spending time with my good friend Damien, from Los Angeles Ballet! He now dances for Ballet Black, where I've been taking class this week. They rehearse at the royal opera house, which had been fun to be inside. I've also been doing bikram yoga and exploring, and it's been a nice break to be somewhere where everyone speaks English for a little while.

I have plans to visit Tallinn, Estonia on the 1st of March, and Copenhagen right after. For now I'm enjoying London so much, and here are some random pictures from Zurich, Oslo, London, and one from Berlin (can you find it?)<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com2London London51.53482 -0.243758tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-85887892353029464342012-02-08T03:56:00.001-08:002012-03-27T08:13:47.294-07:00Where's Lucy?Anybody who's been tracking my progress will laugh at this next turn of events. Of all places, I'm back where I started in Zurich!

I went from Stuttgart to Saarbrucken, where I'd seen that they were hiring girls. But somewhere in the last week I got overly confident with getting in touch with companies at the last minute, and it wasn't as easy to just show up in this case. It's also been harder to find classes to take on the off days, and I was just not feeling so good about it. The cold probably didn't help my decision making either...

Then I got an email inviting me to a private audition in Basel on Thursday. I thought to myself, if I keep sitting around in Saarbrucken, I might not get a class tomorrow, but if I go to Zurich, I know I can get a few in before the audition. Also, the hostel in Zurich was by far the friendliest and most fun, and I knew I would see some familiar faces.

So I raced to the train station, and bby some miraculous stroke of luck, there was a train that left in 15 minutes for Strasbourg, with a direct connection to Zurich. I'd be there by 9:00. In this entire month of traveling, I've never had such a convenient trip with so little planning.

The train to Strasbourg was a very funny one car train that I named " the bullet." here are pictures of the entire inside of the train from where I was sitting.

The Zurich hostel was such a welcome break, and the breakfast with excellent coffee, yogurt, and gruyere cheese wasn't so bad either.

I got a class in this morning, and will do another tonight before getting on the train to Basel. I'm really excited to see the company there, it had a really good reputation and excellent repertoire.

It's a beautiful day in Zurich, glittery flurries against a sunny sky. I'm going to find a laundromat this afternoon, big activity of the day!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-27631662361070092362012-02-06T05:16:00.001-08:002012-02-06T05:16:16.821-08:00Crossing bridges and city linesI didn't think you would find it interesting that I was huddled in bed all day Thursday, sick with a cold. No big deal, and I'm feeling much better, but there wasn't anything very interesting to tell. I spent the next day exploring in Augsburg, had a kundalini massage and found an adult ballet class to take. It was freezing cold but I insisted on saving money so I walked everywhere. I don't know how it feels back home, but in Germany in the last week, it's dropped to about -15 C, which I'm told is extreme. My fingers and toes are so cold through my gloves and socks that it feels like they're being hit by direct air. A huge change from just a week ago.

I'm in Stuttgart but probably leaving tomorrow. I heard about some new opportunities that id like to try before returning to Antwerp next week. Sunday seems quiet for social activities in Stuttgart, but I found a yoga class to take.

My roommate is a very friendly girl named Eleni from Greece, and I think we're having some dinner together later. You really learn to appreciate social interaction when you travel alone.

I keep meaning to tell you the craziest story! First of all, I have to edit an earlier comment that canals passed through Lyon. They are actually rivers, the Rhone and Saone. Well, to get from the hostel to the theater, you had to cross a bridge over the Saone. On the last day, I had all my bags because I was leaving Lyon for Paris, and it was about 9am. It was beautifully sunny and warm, and there were a few other people crossing the bridge on their ways to work.

All of a sudden I noticed that it felt almost too peaceful. I looked around and saw the water on either side, normal, and scanned the ground of the bridge. There were spots from daily city activity, but then I noticed...some of the spots were wet. And some were just splatting down. I could hear them and almost feel the wetness, but it was a perfectly sunny day...

And then I looked up. All along the top of the bridge, in two perfect straight lines, we're hundreds of seagulls, perched on the line. They were really high up and I could only see their undersides, all facing the same direction. That was when I realized, I was walking on a land mine!

When I finally made it across, I thought I'd survived without being hit. Then I saw, on the corner of my bag, a fresh, steaming, gift from above.

And that is the story I've been meaning to tell you.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-82306952425177807852012-01-31T07:54:00.001-08:002012-01-31T07:54:48.685-08:00Berlin!Today I took class with Ballett Staatsoper Berlin. Company class was taught by Vladimir Malakov, the director of the company. Most of the dancers were in another class though, because they had an early stage rehearsal. Vladimir was exactly the same as I remember him from New York, and since I always saw him in Nancy Bielsky's class, I wasn't at all surprised that his class was similar. The company doesn't have any contracts at the moment, but who knows about further down the line.

To get to the opera house from my hostel, I took a tram and an underground train. Sometimes buying tickets is really confusing, but in this case a day pass for €6.40 covers all the forms of transportation. The underground took way longer than I expected, and I barely made it to class in time!!!

After class Leslie Krumwiede, the administrator, invited me to see the show tonight, and helped organize a ticket for me at the box office. This particular show is not held at the opera house, but at the Schiller theater, one stop away on the underground. This is the first ballet I'll have ever seen in Europe, and I'm very excited. I'll post my feedback afterwards!

I found a yoga studio near the center of town and took a very challenging class. I think I was struggling because my cold made it difficult to breathe through my nose, but overall I understood more German than the class I took in Dortmund.

Across the street there was a bead store, where they went a step further than I've ever seen with the types of things you can make! It's hard to describe, but I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow when I go back for another yoga class.

I also managed to do a little sightseeing today, in the FREEZING cold I found the Brandenberg gate, Reichstag building, and Holocaust memorial. Here are some photos, but as usual I have to apologize that they're not masterpieces.

I can't wait to report on the ballet!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8JRS5xX0vzc/TygOiXJDz5I/AAAAAAAAAJM/HvFJyvTXrXc/s640/blogger-image--555373581.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I didn't take many pictures, but I had a wonderful time. My friend Greg was there, and took me to dinner where i tried escargot and fois gras! Here I am in front of l'Arche de Triomphe.

I also visited Montmartre, which was about as picturesque as anything could possibly be, even the tourists couldn't ruin it! For the rest of the day I had the Amelie soundtrack running through my head.

I was in Leipzig today for an audition, the first city so far with really miserable winter. The audition was ok but I move on tomorrow, to Berlin! I have a little cold but it's not so bad.

Oh, I got my hair cut to above my shoulders in Paris!
Class with the company in that glorious studio was amazing, and it was really fun to see the company working. The director wasnt there, so nobody could give me much feedback, although they said he might be interested. I might try to organize another visit later in my trip.

I relocated from the hotel to the hostel, which is up a steep hill and overlooks the whole city. It was worth it for the view alone, although I had trouble sleeping so close to the loud main area, and the bathrooms were pretty awful. It just shows me that I can rely on the reviews online, because that's exactly what they said.

Yesterday was rainy but I finally got to do a little bit of sightseeing. I made a friend Corina who was also visiting Lyon, and we met at the mysterious castle (which is actually a cathedral called Fouviere.) It was massive and beautiful but I think I prefer the view from down the hill.

Walking around yesterday (I was kind of lost to be honest,) I stumbled on a Repetto ballet store. It was like a palace for ballet wear, and it was lovely. Im sure the salesman hated that I was taking pictures, but here you go.

I'm waiting for a train to Paris, where I'll be until Saturday. I'm very excited because I've never been before! It will be a little break in the middle of the trip! <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-42076031453571668432012-01-23T14:18:00.001-08:002012-01-23T14:18:58.696-08:00Mysterious castleI should've taken these pictures again in the evening when everything was lit like a magical fairy tale. I'll be sure to do that tomorrow once I've found out what exactly is in that castle, and whether the view from the top of the ferris wheel is any better than the view from that amazing studio. these are questions that will hopefully be answered soon!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-9526832561622380282012-01-23T05:33:00.001-08:002012-01-23T05:33:49.251-08:00Opera National de LyonWell, I found myself in the most beautiful studio I've ever seen at the Lyon national opera. This company is amazing and has an incredible repertoire, and all the dancers were really beautiful.

The opera house is an old renovated train station in the center of town, and the ballet is on the top level with a view overlooking the whole city. Can you believe this?? The pictures I took make the space look dark, but it was lit so well with natural light that it felt like you were outside!

I was invited to take class tomorrow and Wednesday, and I got to watch some rehearsal today. They were in the beginning stages of learning a Jiri Kylian piece, which was very interesting and beautiful to watch, and I really wanted to join in!!!

One of the pictures is the opera house through the cafe window where I'm sitting now. Some are from the entrance and outside views, and the rest are from floor 12! The dresses are props from Kylian's "petit mort," although I didn't see that one being rehearsed. I'll check tomorrow which one it was, when I get to take class in this amazing studio!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0BNP Paribas - Lyon Opera 5 Rue De La Republique, Lyon45.766375 4.83563tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-85173613169020674032012-01-22T13:46:00.001-08:002012-01-22T13:46:17.607-08:00Arrived in LyonI've made it to Lyon (five trains later, but somehow still standing.) I realized along the way that correct grammar aside, I remember enough French grammar to construct sentences, and can read signs and communicate without that Swahili feeling. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but I got myself from the station to the tram, to the hotel, by speaking only French.

I haven't actually spoken to anyone at the company in Lyon yet, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing here. I think mostly I decided it was time to go to France. I have until Thursday to try to organize class with the company. If it doesn't work out, a girl I met in Dortmund suggested some cool places to take class in Paris, right near Bastille and the Moulin Rouge, so that will be fun too.

In the dark I could still see what a beautiful city Lyon is. There are lots of old beautiful buildings, two big canals, and a very mysterious castle up on a hill. I'm very excited to do some exploring tomorrow. And yes, take pictures, which I know have been lacking.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com1Hôtel de la Marne 78 Rue Charité, Lyon45.749955 4.830247tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-20512879961306676202012-01-22T13:32:00.001-08:002012-01-22T13:32:50.871-08:00I wrote this waiting for the train in StrasbourgOne way to fry your brain is to take the train from Frankfurt into the very edge of France, Strasbourg to be exact. Then try to ask for a pain au chocolate and a coke, and see if you don't accidentally speak German instead of French.

I'll be in Lyon by tonight, and maybe I'll have adjusted to the language transition by then!Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-90630568115190148172012-01-21T13:23:00.001-08:002012-01-21T13:23:23.767-08:00What I did in MainzMainz was fun, although I was a little under the weather, and didn't do much dancing.

I had an amazing meal at a place near the theater, HDW (Haus de deutschen weines) for not a lot of money. I got a huge veal roast, red cabbage, and spaetzle, German noodles. It was delicious. The waiter didn't feel like indulging in meine deutsche zehr schlekt, so he decided to pretend to be French. I wasn't angry though, because he tripped at one point and we both laughed for a long time.

As I was leaving he explained how to get the nearest movie theater, which turned out to be the one I walked past on the walk with Johanna when I first arrived in Mainz. All movies in Germany are dubbed, with no subtitles. I decided to go through with it anyway, and ran into the theater for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

Now, I've read the whole trilogy since I left on this trip (thank goodness for the kindle, much less heavy than lots of books.) I was really excited to see the movie, but of course was worried that I wouldn't understand anything in German. It didn't take me long to make a decision about that, and I was very excited about the outcome. Since I knew the story, it was easy for me to follow what was going on, even within the conversations. I knew if somebody was giving a threat, or telling a joke. It was very rare that I had no idea what was going on. And I knew enough German vocabulary, mostly from the language course my dad sent me, to actually understand some of the dialogue.

when the movie was over, I was very satisfied because it felt like I'd seen a movie. I'm not saying I can understand German. Most of the time it still feels like people could be speaking Swahili around me. I'm just saying it felt like I've made some progress. And, the movie was great!!

The audition today in Mainz was uneventful. I wasn't the director's type and was cut almost instantly. The best thing about it was that I've gotten to know some of the other people from seeing them at other auditions. I exchanged some emails and am happy to have made some new friends.

Now I'm back in Frankfurt for the night and traveling to Lyon tomorrow. The TGV was sold out from Paris to Lyon, so I'm taking a longer route that has at least 3 transfers. I'll be traveling all day, but thankfully it doesn't start until noon!

I found a yoga studio that had a 9am class tomorrow morning, so that will be a nice way to start the day.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6240191006747854206.post-5180668606508070562012-01-19T01:04:00.001-08:002012-01-19T01:04:41.759-08:00Welcome to Mainz!Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them. I was at the train station in Frankfurt waiting for a train to Mainz, about 40 minutes away. I was trying to work a vending machine, and a woman pointed out that it said "out of order." She was a young woman, in her thirties, and she spoke English with an American accent.

She was commuting from Mainz for work, and helped make sure I got on the right train. It turns out that she's the organizer of an English speaking group for people living in Mainz, and they happened to be meeting last night.

From what she described they welcomed newcomers, so I decided to tag along. (she wasnt going to stay because her family was expecting her, but if nobody else showed up, I could at least have some dinner...I was hungry!)

Johanna walked with me from the train station to the restaurant. There were four other people already there, all in their fifties or sixties. They were all so welcoming and happy to see a new face. They told me all about Mainz and suggested things to do, and wanted to hear all about my ballet adventures.

One couple was especially outgoing, and they offered to drive me to my hostel, which was outside of the center of town. I know you're not supposed to accept rides from strangers, but it was like a friend's parents offering me a ride. I've included a picture of them! George Lewis and his wife, whose name I think is Claudia...

Waking up this morning, I saw that I'm right on the Rhine. People last night were telling me that the Rhine separates Mainz and Wiesbaden, an old city that's definitely worth visiting while I'm here.

I'm feeling tired today so I've decided to take the day off from dancing. Later I'll visit the center of town, look at the Gutenberg museum, find a yoga class, and maybe take a quick train to Wiesbaden for dinner.

Can you believe those amazing people I happened to meet??!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007777630528658108noreply@blogger.com0Mainz Mainz49.986761 8.295452
